Eating pancake with chopsticks?

2014/01/20

Pancake, in my memory ever since I have started to eat at the first time, I have been using fork and knife to eat. Even though I pretty like pancake, and the flavour and variety have been increasing making more choices available, personally I don’t feel any freshness on “pancake” this stuff even with all those new varieties. They are simply a kind of change of the flavour indeed. Last weekend, I finally found a café “うめぞの カフェアンドギャラリー (Umezono CAFÉ & GALLERY)” at the Shijo Karasuma offering novel pancake ― matcha pancake eaten with chopsticks~

Different flavours of pancake are usually a change of combination of the topping ingredients or sauces. Pancake itself is basically all the same, or some shops may add some little stuff such as raisins into the pancake mixture.
The matcha pancake of this café is not the kind of simply adding a matcha ice-cream as topping or a matcha sauce. The pancake mixture has matcha added, so the pancake itself is all green! On the top of those green pancakes, you cannot find the typical yellow butter or white cream, but some red bean jam and a piece of brown sugar butter instead.
On the tray I was served, there were the pancake, syrup, and a pair of chopsticks. Without folk and knife, I didn’t quite know how to start with… How can I cut the pancakes into small pieces? LOL
The pancakes were a bit thicker than common, but they were so soft and fluffy♪ There was not a very strong matcha taste, a light aroma of matcha spread in your mouth. The brown sugar butter had less greasy feeling than the usual butter, and the red bean jam was not too sweet. Everything matched well.

This café keeps the appearance of the Kyoto machiya (traditional town house), but inside the café is the feeling of an elegant art gallery. Original western food has been changed to a food in Kyoto style. This is one of the enchantments of this historical city Kyoto.
