Crazy about Matcha – Matcha cheese cake

2014/3/3

This blog has just started for about 3 months, but I found that I have already written something related to matcha for a few times. Matcha steamed bun, matcha spongy cake, matcha hot cake, matcha cappuccino, matcha ice-cream… But this is also one of the characteristics of Kyoto: Matcha can be matched with many things, something you can think of or even those you cannot think of! Matcha cheese cake is quite usual indeed, not something you cannot imagine. But I just have not imagined it can be that tasty!

I have tried some other matcha cheese cakes before, but usually either the taste of matcha or the taste of cheese was too light, something not enough for the combination of these 2 things. This time I went to a café named “らん布袋 (ran Hotei)”, the matcha cheese cake there was the best I have ever tried before. It was just almost the same New York cheesecake but just in green, and the tastes of both matcha and cheese were strong. The balance between these 2 tastes was well managed. I chose the original flavour, and chocolate matcha cheese cake was also available. Of course, there were many other choices in the menu. The interior of the café is the style of machiya (traditional wooden townhouse of Japan), but I was surprised that the owner is a Canadian living in Kyoto. Also he is a professional of tea ceremony. He organizes lessons of tea ceremony in his café. He is awesome!

“ran Hotei” is located in the Sanjokai shopping street, a place that is not as glamorous as Shijo. The shops are all very simple and look like people living around there go for groceries. Since it is not somewhere for sightseeing, you can see the ordinary Kyoto and how is the usual daily life here.
