Pancake by Grandma

2014/5/13

The pancake boom seems like continuing. “Pancake Club” even exists, gathering all ladies who like pancake. Recently in Kyoto, more and more pancake shops have opened.

Using the boom as an excuse, I went to pancake shop called “British Baaba” which is just newly opened in March! It is located at Rokkaku-Shinkyogoku Street (the street where the LOFT in Sanjo is located).

The atmosphere of shop is cheerful and refreshing. The plain wood pillars and floor were still pretty new. The wallpaper somehow gave a kind of retro England feeling with stylish design. But still, there was some Kyoto feeling in the air somewhere inside the shop, a little Japanese-Western fusion.

Here comes the concept of that shop.
“A grandma, who has been living in Britain for a long time, opened a shop with handmade pancakes and French toasts full of love for her grandchildren.”
So, not only pancake, French toast is also its special.

I was attracted to go there by pancake, but French toast also looked good… But I couldn’t eat both at once… And there was no choice like half-half combination. So I decided to have my original choice, pancake.
There are about 10 kinds of pancakes available in the menu, and I ordered “Fruits pancake with yoghurt cream”. Yoghurt, fruits and pancake; that’s not something special with this combination and no surprise. But when I tasted the pancake, I knew why it is called yoghurt cream! I thought yoghurt is just the sauce for the pancakes, but in fact, yoghurt was blended to fresh cream and became sour whipped cream. The proportion of the sweetness of fresh and the sourness of yoghurt was perfect. If it was only yoghurt added to the top of the pancakes, it would become sticky. But when it is changed to whipped cream, it was light and fluffy. As for the fruits, there were various kinds served in the dish. While I was enjoying the pancakes, I already started to think about what I should choose for next time.

I ordered a matcha latte together with the pancake. (Yes, matcha again!) I was so surprised when I saw the matcha latte was served in the kind of bowl for matcha. Who will think that matcha latte is served in something other than a cup? How come only this part is in Japanese style… Since there was no handle for the bowl, I needed to put down my folk and knife to hold the bowl with both hands to drink, and then picking up the folk and knife to continue with my pancakes. I had an unusual tea time keeping switching between the western style and the Japanese style. lol

This time I didn’t tried the French toast, but I would like to have a try next time. That shop is not using ordinary toast, but baguette and Danish♪. And finally I couldn’t determine whether the pancake was the taste from grandma or not, because the talent of my grandma was the Japanese style bean cake. Please have a try on your own to figure out.
